Balayage, ombre and sombre, it all sounds beautiful and French, but what is the difference between the various terms? It may seem like the same, and it can be hard to see the difference. But if you are considering this darker-roots-to-lighter-ends look, it is quite important to know the difference, because each trend have their own technic. If you want to know the difference, read below.

Balayage

Balayage means sweep in French. The technique involves colouring highlights in freehand, with a sweeping motion. The highlights will be in chunkier sections, to make the natural sun-lightened-hair-look. The highlights are systematically placed, which gives the hair a beachy finish, as if you’ve let the sun brighten the tips. This technique looks good in any length of hair.

Ombre

Ombre is the French word for “shadow”. This dip dyed look, is a technique where your hair is darker at the roots, and gradually gets lighter at the end. This trend is mostly common around brown-haired girls, but the technique can be used by every hair colour or type. If you already have highlights or blonde hair, just colour a “fake” root.

Sombre

Sombre is a more “light version” of ombre. This technique looks a bit more natural, because it requires less contrasting shades. Because of the more natural contrasting shades, this technique requires less touch-ups and therefore making it a lower maintenance and less expensive alternative to its more obvious counterpart, ombre.

Bronde

Bronde is the latest addition to the family, and it’s amazing. Traditionally blonde and brown have existed separately, and many women have switched between the two hair colours, but women can now choose bronde – the really pretty in between colour. Bronde fuses blonde and brown into a pretty sun-kissed result. The technique is amazing if you are tired of choosing between blonde or brown, or if you are afraid of a too drastic change. Bronde is a colour/shade, not a technique like ombre, sombre and balayage. You choose the colour that suit your eyes and skin tone, but also by looking at the natural depth of your hair.
